Kitesurfing in Cartagena: The Complete Guide

April 1, 202612 min read

Why is Cartagena a world-class kitesurfing destination?

Kitesurfing in Cartagena de Indias is not just a sport: it is one of the most complete experiences you can have on the Colombian Caribbean coast. Cartagena combines consistent 15 to 25 knot trade winds, warm water year-round (80 to 84 degrees Fahrenheit), a protected spot with shallow water, and the full infrastructure of a UNESCO World Heritage city. Very few kitesurf destinations in the world can match this combination of natural conditions and travel experience.

Unlike isolated destinations such as Cabo de la Vela in La Guajira or Jericoacoara in Brazil, where kitesurfing is essentially the only thing to do, Cartagena offers a complete experience. You ride in the morning with the Bocagrande skyline as your backdrop, eat fresh ceviche at a beachfront restaurant for lunch, explore the Walled City in the afternoon, and finish the day with a cocktail on a Getsemani rooftop. It is kitesurfing with a lifestyle, not just kitesurfing.

Cartagena also has a massive logistical advantage. Rafael Nunez International Airport receives direct flights from Miami, New York, Panama City, Lima, Bogota, Medellin, and many other cities. From the airport to Playa Las Velas, our spot in the El Laguito sector of Bocagrande, it is only 15 to 25 minutes by car. You can be kitesurfing the same day you land. That does not happen at many kitesurf destinations.

When is the wind season for kitesurfing in Cartagena?

Cartagena has two wind seasons for kitesurfing, making it a rideable destination for much of the year. The main season runs from December through April, when the northeast trade winds blow at 15 to 25 knots almost every day. January and February are the peak months, averaging 20 to 25 knots with days when gusts exceed 30 knots. These are the favorite months for experienced riders.

The second season, from June through August, brings 12 to 18 knot winds. They are lighter than the main season but perfectly rideable, especially with larger kites. The water is flatter during these months, making it ideal for practicing tricks or for those who are learning. Beaches are also less crowded, so you get more space and lower accommodation prices. For a month-by-month wind conditions guide, check out our dedicated article.

Water temperature in Cartagena stays between 80 and 84 degrees Fahrenheit (27 to 29 Celsius) year round. Forget the wetsuit: a UV rashguard is the most you will ever need, and we include one in all our lessons. The sun rises at 6 AM and sets between 5:45 and 6:20 PM with little variation thanks to the proximity to the equator. The best riding hours are 10 AM to 5 PM, when the thermal wind complements the trade winds.

💡 Tip: If it is your first time, the second season (June through August) may actually be better for learning. Lighter winds mean more comfortable progression, and low-season prices let you stretch your budget further.

What kitesurf lessons are available in Cartagena and how does IKO progression work?

At Cartagena Surf 420 we offer kitesurf lessons for every level, structured according to the IKO progression system. If you have never touched a kite, our 8-hour beginner course ($1,840,000 COP, ~$440 USD) takes you from initial theory to your first board rides. The progression is clear: you start with kite control on land, move to body dragging in the water, learn relaunching and self-rescue, and finally attempt the waterstart.

The IKO system divides progression into clearly defined levels. Level 1 covers wind theory, equipment setup, kite control, and safety signals. Level 2 includes body dragging, water relaunching, self-rescue, and first waterstart attempts. Level 3 is where you start riding independently: consistent waterstarts, riding in both directions, and first attempts at going upwind. Most of our students reach Level 2 within the 8-hour beginner course.

If you already have some experience, we offer 2-hour sessions ($450,000 COP, ~$107 USD) for practicing specific skills or refreshing after time away from the water. We also have the 12-hour advanced course ($2,760,000 COP, ~$660 USD) for those who want to progress from Level 2 to Level 3 and become independent riders. And if you just want a taste, the 1 hour 15 minute introductory lesson ($280,000 COP, ~$67 USD) gives you a flavor of kitesurfing without a big commitment. Every lesson includes full equipment and an IKO certified instructor.

What equipment is used for kitesurfing in Cartagena and do I need to bring my own?

You do not need to bring any equipment at all. At Cartagena Surf 420 we provide everything needed for each lesson: training kites and full-size kites, twintip boards, harnesses, helmets, impact vests, and UV rashguards. Our gear is refreshed every season and inspected before every use. We use recognized industry brands that guarantee both performance and safety.

For Cartagena conditions, the kites we use vary based on wind intensity and student level. On strong wind days (20 to 25 knots), beginners work with 7 to 9 square meter kites that are more manageable. On lighter wind days (12 to 16 knots), we use 12 to 14 square meter kites to generate enough pull. Mid-size twintip boards (135 to 145 cm) are the most versatile and are what we use in the majority of lessons.

If you are an experienced rider and prefer bringing your own gear, that works too. Full equipment rental at Surf 420 costs $250,000 COP (~$60 USD) for 90 minutes, in case you need to supplement what you bring. Many riders travel with their harness and buy or rent a kite and board at the destination. If you bring your own equipment, make sure your kite works in the 12 to 20 knot range to cover most conditions. How can you combine kitesurfing with tourism in Cartagena?

One of the biggest advantages of kitesurfing in Cartagena is that the city offers as much to do out of the water as in it. A typical week-long itinerary might look like this: two or three days of kitesurf lessons in the morning (catching the winds from 10 AM to 2 PM), combined with cultural exploration in the afternoon. The Walled City, Getsemani, San Felipe Castle, and the plazas of the old town are absolute musts and are just 15 minutes from the spot.

No-wind days (September through November, or occasional flat days in season) are perfect for other activities. You can take a surf lesson when there is swell, go on a sunset paddleboard tour, rent a jet ski to cruise the bay, or try wakeboarding which does not depend on wind. You can also take day trips to the Rosario Islands, Playa Blanca, or the Totumo mud volcano.

For dining, Cartagena is a top-tier food destination. Fresh ceviche in Getsemani, lobster at Bocagrande restaurants, patacones with hogao on the beach: the food is a fundamental part of the experience. And the nights in Cartagena have their own magic, with rooftop bars in colonial buildings, live salsa music, and the Caribbean breeze. After a week combining kitesurfing with everything Cartagena has to offer, you will understand why so many of our students come back every year.
